Benefit concert for the Fondation du CHUM
Montreal, December 15, 2009 – The people of Lanaudière set a shining example of generosity on November 28 when they came out in droves to a benefit concert for the Fondation du Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). The event, organized by a patient of CHUM neurologist Dr. Bernard Brais to increase awareness for a rare disease called hereditary sensory neuropathy type II, or HSN2, raised $6,515.
Danielle Lepage, a resident of the Lanaudière region, is just over 50, but her body is as fragile as that of a 90-year-old. To spread the word about the disease she is battling, and especially to raise funds for research into the condition, she decided to organize a concert featuring Michel Beauchênes and the band S.P.E.C.
In the Lanaudière region alone, more than 20 people are affected by HSN2. Living with the disease is a heavy burden, as Ms. Lepage explains: “Because of HSN2, I’ve had to completely change the way I live. Simple things, like putting on makeup, could kill me. My bones are as fragile as fine china.”
Nathalie Nahmiash, director of philanthropic development at the Fondation du CHUM, attended the concert and was overwhelmed by the spirit of support she witnessed. “It’s always very touching to see these outpourings of generosity from individual donors. It’s at moments like these that we realize how important the work of CHUM doctors really is to people all over Quebec.”
What is sensory neuropathy?
Sensory neuropathy is a neurological disorder that reduces the perception of pain and temperature, especially in the hands and feet. The disease also weakens bones. Some sufferers face amputations to counter repeated infections.
