The Fondation du CHUM: History, mission and role

History

In October 1996, Hôtel-Dieu, Hôpital Notre-Dame and Hôpital Saint-Luc combined to form a unified university hospital centre, the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). A few months later, respective foundations of the three hospitals merged to become the Fondation du CHUM, which officially commenced its activities as a foundation on May 1, 1998.

Mission

The Fondation’s mission is to provide a source of additional funding for the CHUM. In this way it helps maintain the university hospital centre’s status as an international standard-bearer in medical treatment, health promotion, teaching and research.

Role

Support from a foundation makes it possible for a healthcare institution to accelerate its technological development and expand its local, national and international reputation and influence. To support the CHUM and its mission, La Fondation du CHUM uses a variety of means to collect donations, including direct mail campaigns as well as contacts with individual donors, private foundations and corporations. The Fondation also organizes regular benefit events and activities.

The Fondation du CHUM generates income from a number of complementary initiatives (including the Clinique Santé-voyage, Centre d’évaluation de santé, lotteries and draws) which allow it to be self-financing.
