The integrated teaching and training centre

A new teaching and training centre – the Centre intégré d’enseignement et de formation (CIEF) – will open as part of the new CHUM centre-ville project. This will be one of the largest medical teaching institutions in Quebec, with a special mission to introduce and develop the most effective teaching approaches. The centre will also include a technological platform that meets the highest standards in present-day teaching hospitals.

Medical education in the future will be very different from the way it is taught today, as its principal teaching tool will be simulations. Now students meet actual patients who agree to work with them, but soon students will be able to practise on dummies, opening up innumerable learning opportunities. For example, students will be able to practise manual dexterity for surgical procedures using a simulator that resembles a video game. They’ll also have access to simulated clinical scenarios in multidisciplinary rooms such as operating theatres or intensive care units. The new teaching centre’s facilities will need leading-edge equipment, including robots, advanced medical apparatus, laboratory materials and telehealth videoconferencing systems.

This future teaching and training centre will allow students to develop their skills in a culture where interprofessional collaboration is fully integrated.
