Types of donations
When you make a donation to the Fondation du CHUM, you’re contributing directly to the well-being of the 1 million patients every year whose health depends on the teams of caregivers at our university hospital centre. Every donation to the Fondation helps the CHUM carry out the five key aspects of its mission:
- Patient care and treatment
- Teaching
- Research
- Healthcare promotion
- Assessment of healthcare technologies and intervention methods
More specifically, every donation helps the CHUM:
- Acquire equipment that reflects the latest developments in medical technology...so that patients can receive the best possible care
- Pursue ever more advanced research to help us understand and treat diseases
- Let doctors and healthcare professionals upgrade their knowledge and training, and maintain their leading edge in medicine today
There are several different ways you can give.
Monthly contribution
Our pre-authorized monthly contribution option allows you to provide ongoing support for the CHUM over a certain period of time. By choosing this form of donation, you can help us reduce the costs associated with our direct mail fundraising campaigns. You’ll also be helping to protect the environment by creating less of a need for printed matter in the mail.
Monthly donations are processed on the 1st or 15th day of the month, in order to reduce administrative costs.
Official tax receipts:
Official income tax receipts are processed and issued once a year, at the end of January.

One-time donation
Every one-time donation helps the CHUM grow. Whatever amount you give, your donation, when combined with gifts from other individual donors, allows the CHUM to deliver ever-better care and treatment for its patients.
Official tax receipts:
If you make an online donation of $15 or more at our website, you’ll automatically receive a message by email confirming your donation. This message can be used as a tax receipt, as it meets Canada Revenue Agency criteria for this purpose. Simply click to print a copy and enclose it with your income tax return. Do not duplicate or alter the printout of your receipt in any way.
If you make a one-time donation of $15 or more in person, by telephone, by fax or by mail, your tax receipt will be sent to you by mail within two weeks following reception of your donation.

Planned giving
Nowadays, more and more people include a donation to a cause they care about when they prepare a financial plan for tax purposes or write their will. If you would like to support the CHUM in this way, planned giving may have advantages for you as well as for us. For example, it will lower the taxes that you pay now and that your estate will pay later on.
The most popular forms of planned giving include:

- Charitable trust
- Endowment

Donation “in kind”
Some donors may wish to donate property to the Fondation, such as real estate or works of art of appreciable value. This is known as a donation “in kind” and is another way of supporting the CHUM and its essential work.
The donor does not have to sell the property and give the proceeds to the foundation. Instead, the property can be donated directly to the Fondation. The amount of the related tax deduction is established by an independent expert who submits a report in writing to the Fondation.

Donation “in honour”
A donation “in honour” to the Fondation du CHUM is a much-appreciated gift whose effects will be felt for a long time afterward, as it helps support the CHUM in its key mission. A donation of this type is an ideal way to:
- Celebrate a wedding, an anniversary, the birth of a child or any other special occasion
- Honour a family member or other person dear to you
- Make a personal statement of gratitude to a CHUM healthcare professional
When you make a donation “in honour” we will send the designated person a letter stating that you have made a donation in their honour, without mentioning the amount of the donation (unless you instruct us otherwise). We will then send you an official tax receipt.

Memorial donation
A memorial donation to the Fondation du CHUM is an excellent way to pay lasting tribute to someone who has died and to express your sympathy to their loved ones. At the same time, your contribution will make a real difference to the CHUM and its patients.
When you make a memorial donation, we will send a letter of condolence to the family of the deceased person. Your name will be mentioned, but not the amount of the donation (unless you instruct us otherwise). We will then send you an official tax receipt.
