April 28, 2010 - On Sunday, April 18, one hundred and fifty-five staff members from the Research Centre of the University of Montreal Hospital Center (CRCHUM) took part in the CRCHUM Challenge at Parc Jean-Drapeau. The fundraising activity – organized in collaboration with the Fondation du CHUM as part of the Scotiabank Charity Challenge – raised an impressive $75,585 to help fund research. Thanks to this tremendous effort, the CRCHUM exceeded its goal by more than $25,000.

“Through this event, we were able to show everyone our ability to achieve common goals, which is essential to our centre’s success,” said CRCHUM director Dr. Jacques Turgeon. The staff’s efforts will help support the Research Centre and its activities, which are designed to improve the health of everyone in Quebec.

Cheered on by volunteers and passers-by, participants walked or ran 5 kilometres or the 21 km half-marathon. Close to $280,000 was raised during the Scotiabank Charity Challenge for the benefit of 25 local charities. The CRCHUM – which was taking part in the event for the first time – had the highest participation rate and raised the most money.

The CRCHUM is the largest of Université de Montréal’s affiliated research centres, bringing together more than 300 researchers – many of them also clinical practitioners – as well as 400 students. Their work is focused on the following research themes: cancer, cardiometabolic diseases, infection-immunity-inflammation, musculo-skeletal diseases, neuroscience, risks to health, and healthcare systems and services.
CRCHUM activities cover all types of research in the healthcare field: clinical, fundamental, evaluative and epidemiological. All are intended to promote better health and prevent illness, as well as promote the better treatment of diseases.
