See You at the Summit!

Dr. Jean-Guy Villemure, Dr. Dang Khoa Nguyen, Dr. Patrick Cossette, Dr. Alain Bouthillier, Dr. Normand Giard and Dr. Jean-Marc St-Hilaire

December 15, 2009 – On January 8, 2010, Dr. Alain Bouthillier will leave for Argentina, where he’ll face a climb to the top of the 6,692-metre Mount Aconcagua (22,841 feet), the “Colossus of the Americas” – the highest point in the Andes mountain range and the highest summit in the world outside of Asia. Dr. Bouthillier’s expedition is intended to raise public awareness about epilepsy and raise funds for further research on this illness, in order to provide better treatment for patients at the CHUM. At the same time, the climb is also a personal challenge.

The expedition will last three weeks. But it will also take several months of preparation and rigorous training prior to the climb for Dr. Bouthillier who is personally covering all its costs. Jogging, training with a 25 kg backpack and sessions in a hypobaric (altitude) chamber will acclimatize him to the austere conditions he will face on the ascent, when the air temperature will fall to –25°C and oxygen to 40% of its standard concentration at sea level.
