April 7, 2010 – The Université de Montréal has just honoured the Fondation du CHUM for its gift of $500,000 to support chairs in research and teaching. The gift is part of a multi-year funding agreement which began in 2001 and extends until 2020, representing a cumulative total of $7.6 million.

At the recognition event held in honour of the Fondation, Dr. Jean Lucien Rouleau, dean of Medicine, extended his thanks to the foundation for “its extraordinary contribution to the advancement of research and teaching.” He went on to say, “Chairs are an excellent way for helping research get to a higher level and attain national and international recognition.”

The chairs are managed by experienced, internationally renowned researchers pursuing medical specialties in fields as varied as family medicine, osteoarthritis, thoracic surgery and nursing science. In addition to contributing to the reputation of the Université de Montréal and the CHUM, their efforts advance medical knowledge and allow the latest scientific breakthroughs to be applied directly in the hospitals.

The Fondation supports research and teaching at the CHUM in a variety of other ways as well. This contribution is in addition to the $1.25 million recently given to the CHUM Research Centre. The Fondation also distributes grants each year to promote excellence and provide young researchers, doctors and healthcare professionals with the opportunity to study abroad. More than half of the some $7 million that the foundation gives to the CHUM each year is dedicated to research and teaching, representing its biggest commitment to the hospital centre.
