Their stories

France Villeneuve’s Story

At the CHUM, beyond a hospital with cutting-edge technology and a team of very highly skilled specialists, France found a staff of attentive, smiling professionals who always found the right words when she needed answers, held her hand when her family was far away, brought her a blanket when she felt chilly, and made her laugh when she most needed to.

Without question, for this mandatory hospitalization, the comfortable, light-filled setting of the CHUM, where even simple chicken soup tastes excellent, helped give her good memories of her stay.

France is now back home with her loved ones, but still comes regularly to the CHUM for chemotherapy treatments.

Return

Denis Brott’s Story

On his return from a concert tour of Europe, internationally renowned cellist Denis Brott was admitted to intensive care at the CHUM following a diagnosis of COVID-19. The medical teams helped him through multiple complications, even putting him into an artificial coma for 32 days so that he could win this brutal battle.

What enabled Denis to come through was, of course, the outstanding care he received, but also the support of a music-loving CHUM physician who, although not involved in Denis’ treatment, paid him daily visits during his hospital stay. This doctor’s reassuring presence, the music he had Denis listen to, and the virtual meetings he set up with Denis’ family brought the famous musician strength and courage.

Denis is keenly aware of the fact that he received world-class care close to home and has made a new friend for life. He has now recovered and is full of gratitude for all those who cared for, encouraged, and supported him during the most difficult parts of his hospital stay. This fall, as a token of thanks, he gave some recitals at the CHUM for the medical staff.

Return

Émilie Gosselin’s Story

Émilie has suffered from a little-known disease since birth. Without hesitation, her family moved from their home region of Quebec City to the Montreal area, so that Émilie could get the best possible care and treatment. Having undergone about forty operations by the time she reached adulthood, Émilie was advised to hand over her treatment to teams at the CHUM. Since then, our hospital centre’s specialized and sub-specialized teams have shown creativity and sought out the best ideas available internationally, continually improving Émilie’s quality of life. [Read more]

[Continued] There are few departments at the CHUM that Émilie has not visited, meaning that she is well aware of just how competent, available, and attentive the many professionals who care for her are. Whether they’re providing her with a special splint so that she can go surfing with her friends, or proposing a new type of bandage to keep her a little cooler in summer, their support makes all the difference in Émilie’s life – almost letting her forget that she is one of the only people dealing with this rare disease in the whole of North America.

For the past two years, Émilie’s condition has been more stable, and she now comes for follow-up visits and minor interventions with the CHUM teams about twice per month.
