It is an incurable disease that predominantly affects people of African descent and a certain subset of people with Middle Eastern ancestry. Although current treatments range from medication to blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants, sickle cell disease remains an underdeveloped area of care.

Backed by your generosity, the CHUM has the potential to become a leader in treating patients with inherited red blood cell disorders, including sickle cell disease. Its teams are already working hard to expand the breadth of knowledge on these still too-little-known blood conditions, including through the SANGRE program, which seeks to boost life expectancy for affected patients throughout Quebec. The program is divided into clinical, educational and research streams, which will collectively help continuously improve patient care, provide a better understanding of relevant complications and train network partners.

“The clinical component alone is expected to increase the life expectancy of adult patients in Quebec from 47 to 60 years through specialized and standardized care. The research component, on the other hand, seeks to help reduce both the mortality rates and health complications associated with sickle cell disease.
