Access to healthcare is a key determinant of health. It ensures earlier diagnosis of diseases, which helps lower comorbidity and mortality rates. Unfortunately, disparities in access still persist despite Quebec\u2019s universal healthcare coverage. In particular, our current system does not adequately meet the needs and reflect the experiences of minority groups, including First Nations and Inuit. For example, according to one survey on access to public services for Indigenous people living in Quebec\u2019s urban areas, 57% of respondents reported having experienced racism while receiving services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CHUM\u2019s addiction medicine team, in partnership with Projets Autochtones du Qu\u00e9bec (PAQ), is currently working to develop a service designed to help Indigenous people navigate the health system in a way that addresses their experiences and needs. The goal of this new service is to break down major barriers to accessing healthcare by providing culturally safe care that engages with patients respectfully and is sensitive to the cultures, values and realities of Indigenous people who may be experiencing intergenerational trauma, addiction, mental health issues and\/or homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cYour support can help us reach our goal of doubling the staff working on this project and make further progress in the reconciliation between First Nations members and the healthcare system. It would also ensure that the healthcare we provide is culturally adapted to the 11 Indigenous nations in 55 communities across Quebec. The CHUM would also be able to take concrete action to reduce the health inequality experienced by Indigenous communities.\u201d
