According to the World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a><\/strong>, the climate crisis is the greatest current threat to public health. Yet ironically, our healthcare systems are major emitters of greenhouse gas (GHG), generating approximately 5% of GHG emitted in Canada and worldwide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both for the future of our planet and for the sake of public health, the CHUM\u2019s teams are hoping to implement a strategy to help the hospital and healthcare sector shrink its carbon footprint and achieve carbon neutrality. We are very proud to be announcing a major donation from the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Family Foundation, which will help bring this bold, trailblazing vision to fruition as fast as possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CHUM\u2019s low-carbon action plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The CHUM\u2019s specialists are working as we speak on a number of ways to decarbonize the hospital, so that it absorbs as much greenhouse gas as it emits, without compromising on care and services. Several specific solutions have been proposed and considered, such as installing equipment to cut food waste by 70%, an increase in the proportion of contracts incorporating environmental clauses, studying and purchasing reusable medical supplies or using more environmentally friendly anaesthetic gases<\/strong>. At the same time, monitoring tools are being developed, with performance indicators integrated into the monitoring of operations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CHUM\u2019s carbon neutrality strategy places it at the forefront of the fight against climate change and makes it an inspiration for others who want to make a significant difference. This initiative is part of a broader collaboration with the Minist\u00e8re de l\u2019Environnement du Qu\u00e9bec<\/a><\/strong>, which is funding two projects to transform the healthcare system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
