Operational coordination at the CHUM involves managing a complex range of activities every day: nearly 100 patient discharges, 110 transfers to in-patient units, 100 new admissions—including many from the Emergency Department—and more than 2,500 outpatient visits. To support this level of activity, the Operations Coordination Centre (CCO), a new command centre designed to monitor and manage hospital flow in real time, was created thanks to support from the Trottier Family Foundation, a long-standing partner committed to advancing initiatives that strengthen our healthcare system.
Operational coordination that enables faster decisions and better patient care
Equipped with 14 screens displaying the CHUM’s key performance indicators in real time, the CCO gives clinical teams a comprehensive view of hospital operations—from Emergency Department volumes and bed occupancy to staff availability. This big-picture view, supported by two predictive data algorithms, enables teams to quickly adjust priorities, reduce wait times and make informed decisions in a timely fashion, helping to ensure that every patient receives the best possible care and support. In practical terms, it becomes easier to identify when a bed is unavailable, expedite room cleaning and prioritize a diagnostic test, as well as improve coordination both within the CHUM and with partner hospitals—ultimately strengthening the efficiency of the healthcare system as a whole.
