The podcast series Déjouer la maladie : mon doc et moi – sharing how health research changes lives every day at the CHUM
In the five-part podcast series Déjouer la maladie : mon doc et moi (in French only), veteran radio host Paul Arcand shines a spotlight on the importance of health research, and especially how it is changing lives. From cancer to women’s heart health to mental health, hear the moving stories of patients who were at an impasse with their existing treatment options, until they were given new hope because of medical innovations, funded in part by donors like you.
Get an inside look at the research being conducted at the CHUM and its research centre through interviews with internationally recognized researchers and doctors.
Episode 01 | Cancer
Hearing the word “cancer” can turn your world upside down. In this first episode, Paul Arcand speaks with Lise Roy and Lynda Piché, who share their journeys with the disease. Plus, Dr. Antoine Désilets from the CHUM explains how tumour sequencing is helping save lives in a very real way, as this medical breakthrough allows cancer to be targeted with precision so that doctors can pinpoint the best treatment for each patient.
Episode 02 | Mental Health
We all know someone who is facing mental health challenges. One third of people living with depression do not recover through psychotherapy or traditional medication. In this second episode, Sylvie Nikiema shares her experience with the downward spiral of depression. Thanks to insights from Dr. Didier Jutras-Aswad and Dr. Nicolas Garel, psychiatrists at the CHUM, we discover a revolutionary and surprising treatment that combines mindfulness, hallucinogenic substances, and captivating music…
Episode 03 | Women’s Heart Health
Although men’s and women’s hearts look anatomically similar, the symptoms of cardiovascular disease in women too often go unrecognized, hindering diagnosis and delaying effective treatment. In this third episode, Guylaine Pinet and Sylvie Lachize share the challenging journey they faced before reaching the CHUM’s CardioF Center of Expertise, where heart surgeon Jessica Forcillo and her team dedicate their research to women’s heart health.
Episode 04 | Hepatitis C
In this fourth episode, we learn about an unexpected collaboration between Dr. Julie Bruneau, an addiction medicine specialist at the CHUM, and Isabelle Boisvert, a former homeless woman who faced multiple addictions. Through the Montréal sans HépC program, the two women joined forces to ensure that an effective treatment for hepatitis C could reach the most at-risk and vulnerable people in our society.
Episode 05 | Epilepsy
In this final episode dedicated to advances in the field of epilepsy, we meet Carl Labrecque and Mathilde Recly, for whom medication has never been able to put an end to their persistent seizures. Thanks to technological progress and the advanced expertise of physicians like Dr. Dang Khoa Nguyen, Chief of Neurology at the CHUM, new surgical procedures can significantly improve the quality of life of patients living with epilepsy.
