Thanks to Paul Durocher’s visionary gift, the CHUM is positioning itself as a leader in precision health through the acquisition of tools and resources that will make it a more agile, innovative hospital able to meet future needs.
The first cornerstones were laid this year. Following a groundbreaking competition, 13 innovative projects were selected to pave the way for more targeted care, tailored to each patient’s unique genetic profile.
Strong momentum to advance medicine
The competition inspired remarkable engagement and attention to detail: 73 letters of intent were submitted and evaluated by 17 independent, high-level experts. At the end of the process, 13 projects were selected to share an allocated budget of $3.2 million.
- Nine pilot projects (up to $100,000 each) are exploring new avenues in neurosurgery, kidney transplantation, infectious diseases, and lung oncology. The goal: generate the preliminary data needed to prepare funding applications and develop larger-scale initiatives.
- Four major implementation projects (up to $600,000 each) will integrate concrete innovations—including artificial intelligence and genetic analysis—into clinical care for microbiology-infectious diseases, radiology, intensive care, and hematology-oncology.
Acquisition of a next-generation sequencer to support precision health
Thanks to this unprecedented gift, the CHUM has acquired the NovaSeq X+ sequencer, a state-of-the-art system capable of reading and performing genomic analysis on sample data. The arrival of this technology marks a key milestone in precision health and opens up major prospects for faster diagnosis of genetic diseases, in-depth tumour analysis to guide cancer treatments, and more personalized care based on each patient’s profile.

A legacy with lasting impact

“Mr. Paul Durocher’s exceptional bequest allows the CHUM to reach a decisive milestone in precision health with the acquisition of a cutting-edge sequencer and the funding of 13 bold and promising projects. These projects embody the hope and future of medicine, placing each patient’s uniqueness at the heart of care. The CHUM Foundation is proud to propel these initiatives forward.”

By accelerating the integration of these innovations, Paul Durocher’s legacy will forever transform how we prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases for everyone, right here in Quebec.
