Leveraging robotics to act faster than disease

Power Corporation of Canada makes major donation to the CHUM Robotic Center of Excellence

The CHUM Foundation is thrilled to announce that Power Corporation of Canada has pledged $2 million to support and expand the CHUM Robotic Center of Excellence (RCE). This incredible gift will help us achieve our mission of giving the CHUM a head start by combining its teams’ incredible breadth of knowledge with the power of artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, robotics and other emerging technologies, to build a future where we all can spend less time battling disease.

Becoming Quebec’s leader in medical robotics

Led by thoracic surgeon Dr. Moishe Liberman, the RCE’s innovative structure brings together the vital skills and knowledge required to examine how robotic technology is applied, provide training on the use of robotics, and coordinate the development of robotic technology at the CHUM and within Quebec’s wider healthcare system.

Now, thanks to this generous donation, the RCE can think bigger and act faster, strengthening its teams’ technological and educational abilities to deliver groundbreaking, minimally invasive care. Three areas of focus will be prioritized as the RCE grows:

Purchasing cutting edge equipment such as surgical robots to reduce the risk of surgical complications, shorten hospitalization and recovery times, and improve clinical outcomes, the patient experience and patient well being

Continue leading the charge in robotic technology, assessing and identifying high priority technologies based on the benefits to care and return on investment (e.g., leveraging surgical robotics to cut operating costs by 25%)

Providing training to medical staff to enhance their robotics knowledge and skills, help them better apply the things they learn, and share their knowledge with the rest of Quebec’s healthcare system

Did you know?

In 2023, with support from the CHUM Foundation, the RCE was able to acquire a next‑generation da Vinci, a revolutionary robotic surgery system that helped make the CHUM the first hospital in the world to perform a lung resection without having to make painful incisions between the ribs. This far less invasive procedure is now practiced throughout the entire world.

Working together to build a brighter future

By investing in trailblazing initiatives like the RCE and empowering the CHUM to use robotics to push the boundaries of what is medically possible, Power Corporation of Canada is actively helping unlock medical breakthroughs and improve healthcare.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to Power Corporation of Canada for this game‑changing donation.
