The CHUM Foundation is proud to be able to count on METRO’s crucial support in advancing diabetes care. The grocery giant recently contributed $1 million to the fight to act faster than diabetes, making it a powerful ally in bolstering the efforts of the Centre d’expertise en diabète (CED), the diabetes expertise centre of the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM).
METRO, a food and pharmacy leader in Quebec and Ontario, plays an active role in the communities it serves by working to reduce social inequalities, especially in terms of food and health. METRO has harnessed its unwavering commitment and audacious vision for bettering collective well-being to support the CHUM’s CED, an initiative set to change the lives of thousands of people in Quebec.
An expertise centre with an eye to providing comprehensive, innovative diabetes care
Diabetes, one of the most common chronic diseases in Quebec, affects more than 850,000 people across the province and often leads to serious complications: it’s the leading cause of dialysis and blindness in adults under 65. These statistics highlight a critical need to revolutionize the course of treatment for diabetes and offer patients top-of-the-line care. That’s where the CED and its dedicated interdisciplinary team comes in.
METRO’s sizeable donation has an impact far greater than its monetary value. It will serve as a major driving force in revolutionizing diabetes care and in enabling diabetes specialists and endocrinologists to incorporate new treatments and technologies into their practice, including artificial pancreas systems, new and improved insulin delivery devices, the latest in glucose meters, AI applications for screening diabetes-related retinal diseases, computerized management systems for procedures requiring fasting, a self-directed training platform and biobanks.
In addition to keeping the CED’s mission alive, these funds will promote groundbreaking models of care across the broader healthcare system, spark breakthroughs fuelled by cutting-edge research and provide care teams and patients with high-quality education on every facet of diabetes.
“Pharmacist owners affiliated with Jean Coutu and Brunet are on the frontlines of helping diabetes patients. Our support for preventive care and improved CED services is the continuation of a long standing partnership with the CHUM that has been going strong for nearly 10 years. This commitment to public health and wellness is the very essence of our brand’s health mission, and we are pleased to be able to play a role in helping develop and implement innovative practices that will revolutionize research, patient management and treatment of this chronic disease.”
