A $1 million donation to improve access to care for Indigenous peoples

The CHUM Foundation is excited to announce that Scotiabank will be generously donating $1 million for the major fundraising campaign, Act faster than disease.

With this sizable donation, Scotiabank is supporting the CHUM’s teams in their efforts to implement the “Indigenous wellness: with, by and for Indigenous peoples” initiative, which recognizes that Indigenous peoples have a right to access health services and their medical practices, free from discrimination. The project supports clinical and research efforts to identify and overcome key barriers to access to care in order to eliminate disparities and barriers within the CHUM and, ultimately, in all of Quebec’s hospitals.

This support from Scotiabank contributes to building a fairer health system for Indigenous communities, particularly the disadvantaged ones. Pierre Laboursodière, Vice-President, Wealth Management, Private Banking for Eastern Canada, promotes this vision while being involved with numerous Quebec-based community organizations, particularly in the health services field.

Pierre understands how crucial it is for healthcare to be accessible to everyone—regardless of their gender, background, or socio-economic situation. He believes that philanthropy can enable expedited initiatives like this one, which make a tangible difference for people in need who are too often overlooked by society. “Facilitating access to healthcare for people from Indigenous communities is a key aspect of reconciliation. By supporting this program, we’re helping improve people’s lives and building stronger, more resilient communities.”

A vision of a more equitable future

Scotiabank, through ScotiaRISE, is committed to investing in initiatives dedicated to promoting economic resilience for disadvantaged groups, as well as supporting organizations working to revitalize Indigenous languages and cultures.

“We here at Scotiabank are enormously proud to be contributing to the CHUM Foundation’s major fundraising campaign, and we expect its work to result in healthier communities.”

Icône coeur avec rayon

The CHUM Foundation is deeply grateful to Scotiabank for this exceptional donation, which paves the way for a future and for care that is safer, more equitable and more aligned with Indigenous cultures and values.
