Why consult us?

The Public Health Agency of Canada and the Institut national de santé publique du Québec recommend that all travellers consult a travel health professional before going abroad.

There are many good reasons to take advantage of our expertise:

  1. Find out which vaccines you ought to receive and the right time to get your recommended shots.
  2. Get the reassurance of having consulted real experts who know what advice you’ll need, based on your age and present state of health, or the details of the trip you’ve planned.
  3. Learn about the health risks you may be exposed to during your trip and what steps you should take to prevent illness.
  4. Find out about diseases that may be all but extinct in Canada but are still common in other regions of the world, so you can make sure you’ll be coming home in good health.
  5. Support the Fondation du CHUM and its mission – since all profits from the Clinique Santé-voyage go directly to the Fondation.

Ideally, you should visit the Clinic 6 to 8 weeks before your departure date. However, because your health is precious, “better late than never” is the rule to follow.

In the meantime, you may consult our travel advice brochure (in French) and read the Canadian’s Guide for Healthy Travel Abroad “Well on Your Way”.

Introduction

When you travel abroad, you may be visiting countries where conditions which are very different from what you’re used to in Quebec or Canada may involve serious dangers to your health and safety.

Preventive measures against these risks, including vaccination, careful attention to the safety regulations and the use of quality protective products such as sun blocks, mosquito netting or water purification will contribute to a successful trip and to returning home in good health.

The Clinique Santé-voyage provides a full range of travel vaccines as well as basic immunization to help protect your health on a daily basis.

Why get immunized?

Many serious diseases can be avoided through proper vaccination. Updating your immunizations is a crucial step you should take to protect your health before you leave on a trip overseas. Because most vaccines will protect you up to almost 100%, you won’t have to worry when you leave home. And it will vastly increase your chances of being in good health when you return.

The right immunization for the right trip, at the right time

Whether you’re leaving in 2 months, 6 months or next year, it’s never too soon to get immunized. For most travel destinations you’ll need several vaccines. Because many of these require more than one shot and your immunity only begins to develop 10 to 14 days after vaccination, it’s very important to put your travel immunization plan at the top of your to-do list.

To be well protected, it is preferable that you visit us 6 to 8 weeks before your departure. However, if you don’t have sufficient time, it’s better to opt for a last-minute consultation than leave home without any protection at all.

The Clinique Santé-voyage

Your passport for good health

Founded in 1978 by the Hôpital Saint-Luc and formerly known as the Clinique Santé-voyage Saint-Luc, the Fondation du CHUM’s Clinique Santé-voyage is a pioneer in its domain. It is also the only francophone GeoSentinel site in Nord America. Always recognized as the reference in travel-health, our clinic receives tens of thousands of visits every year, making it one of the largest of its kind in Quebec.

The Clinique Santé-voyage also invests itself in the fight against seasonal flu. Professionals visit companies to encourage employees to protect themselves against influenza. The results mean a lower absenteeism rate, increased productivity and better protected health.

Being concerned with contributing to maintaining the quality of our services for travellers, the Clinique Santé-voyage has also put in place an annual teaching activity that brings together numerous healthcare professionals, the Travel Health Symposium.
