Earlier this year, the CHUM Foundation and its ambassador Guy Lafleur launched the Guy Lafleur Fund to support cancer research at the CHUM. Since then, the Fund’s “Face Off Against Cancer with Guy Lafleur” campaign has undertaken a number of initiatives to bring hope to people facing cancer, and from July 6 to 19, 2021, it will be putting Guy Lafleur’s 1971 Memorial Cup ring up for auction. This is a rare opportunity for Quebecers to get their hands on a collector’s item!
A ring for the ages
Guy’s long‑time friend Jean‑Yves Doyon has decided to lace up for the CHUM Foundation by offering up a priceless item for auction: Guy Lafleur’s Memorial ring from his 1971 victory with the Quebec Remparts. Hockey fans can bid on the ring from July 6 to 19, 2021: http://fondsguylafleur.encanpro.ca
This ring is worth a great deal, encapsulating as it does a part of Quebec’s hockey history. In his final year of junior hockey, Guy Lafleur and his Quebec Remparts managed to defeat the Edmonton Oil Kings on May 19, 1971, taking home the Memorial Cup. This was the first Memorial championship in the franchise’s history, and it kicked off two weeks of celebrations for the victorious team in Québec City. Even though Guy Lafleur went on to an astonishing career, racking up five Stanley Cups with the Canadiens, his 1971 Memorial Cup win remains one of his greatest achievements. This is a very rare ring that is full of hockey memories.
“The 1971 Memorial Cup is still an important milestone for myself and hockey fans everywhere,” says Guy Lafleur. “I’m glad that the ring can help make a difference for people who, like me, are in a tough fight against cancer.”
Support Guy Lafleur and all cancer patients
Guy Lafleur has been in the fight of his life against lung cancer for several years now. With the quality of care he has received from the CHUM, it was only natural that he’d join the CHUM Foundation as an ambassador for the cause, and he has been actively fundraising for cancer research through the Guy Lafleur Fund ever since. His “Face Off Against Cancer with Guy Lafleur” campaign has been a huge success. All funds raised will be used to support cancer research at the CHUM and will directly contribute to supporting this cause that’s near and dear to The Flower.
